Lakeside slideshow

Just north of Denver, Lakeside Amusement Park is many things: one of the most historic amusement parks in the U.S., its own municipality (pop. 8), and a can't-miss attraction for fans of all things retro.

Top 6 Oddspots in Colorado

Colorado Alligator Farm
North of Alamosa, the farm is now home to about 400 gators, the largest of which are more than ten feet long and about 500 pounds. In the snowy winters, the big reptilians even like to climb up on the snow and soak in the sun’s rays.

Grandpa Jerry's Clown Museum
On the plains in Arriba, this collection of over 3,000 clown artifacts, this is most likely the preeminent museum of clown memorabilia in the world. There are paintings of clowns, and figurines, and banks, and music boxes. There are baby rattles and Picasso prints, Ronald McDonald figurines and Jackson Pollock-esque Emmet Kelly portraits. There are clowns, lots and lots and lots of clowns.

Guffey
The extra mileage off the beaten path is a small price to pay to check out Guffey (pop. 30) for an hour or two. Bill Soux, the proprietor of Last Chance Antiques and several rental cabins in town, is also a mad artist. His masterpiece is the Guffey Garage, looking like a cross between a Wild West barroom, Dr. Frankenstein’s lab, and a psychedelic vision.

Rangely Carrot Men
Tucked away in a rocky chasm south of Rangely, accessible via dirt road and short foot trail, are a number carrot-shaped, carrot-colored figures, some bearing antennae atop their round heads. Vegetable gods? Carrot-like extraterrestrials that ate humans? Orange ghosts from the future?

Bishop Castle
One of Colorado’s most preeminent—and quirkiest—roadside attractions, Bishop Castle is still a work-in-progress. Jim Bishop started his big, strange castle in 1959 and now dubs it “the largest one-man construction project in the world.” No kidding.

Pueblo Levee Mural Project: World's Longest Painting
The levee holding back the Arkansas River for over three miles as it passes through Pueblo is a concrete canvas for what the Guinness folks have certified as the world’s longest painting. What began as oddball paintings by the anonymous and nocturnal Tee Hee Artists in the late 1970s soon became legitimized by a community-approved organization

Ramble Colorado cited on Wikipedia page for Fool's Gold Loaf

Here's a piece of awesome news: Ramble Colorado (the book) was cited as a reference on the Wikipedia page for Fool's Gold Loaf, the Glendale delicacy favored by Elvis Presley when he was in full '70s jumpsuits-and-gluttony mode.

For the uninitiated, it's a hollowed-out loaf of bread with alternating layers of peanut butter, jelly, and bacon.

A moment in Paonia

I was pulling up to park in downtown Paonia and on the edge of the parking lot at Don's Supermarket there was a tractor. There was a budget attached to it. In the bucket sat a dog.
