There are 17 marijuana dispensaries on South Broadway in Denver within roughly a mile of my house.
How do I know the exact tally? Because I just rode my bike from the Gates site at Mississippi Avenue to the city limits at Yale Avenue -- exactly two miles -- and took pictures of them (above).
It's been a good thing for South Broadway. When I bought my house that's two blocks west of Denver's main north-south street in 2003, most of these storefronts were empty, and south of Antique Row, liquor stores, check-cashing places, and used-car lots dominated Broadway's southern reaches. Today there is a brewery, restaurants, a few galleries, a bakery, a record store, crafts stores, and a hackerspace -- and 17 legal marijuana dispensaries.
There's Ganja Gourmet, which specializes in weed cookies and weed pizzas and enjoyed a visit from Triumph the Insult Comic Dog during the Great American Beer Festival; plenty of converted service stations and car lots; and my pick, Patient's Choice.
What a difference a decade makes.
